Comments Off on September Meeting Chillicothe – 09/13/14

Brethren,

This is your official notice that the September meeting has been moved by special dispensation to Saturday, September 13.  This had been previously discussed, and the only conflict mentioned was that our Secretary has a previous engagement. WB Pat King also explained that this would not be the first time that such a move had taken place.

Our meeting will be hosted by Scioto Lodge No. 6 at the Chillicothe Masonic Temple.  Our actives meeting will be held at 1:30 pm, and we will hold our regular meeting at 3 pm, which will be followed by a table lodge.  The presentation at the Table Lodge will be a paper submitted by the Worshipful Master of Scioto Lodge, WB Neil Zizelman.

We’ve had a paper submitted by one of our newest members, Brother Raymond Walters, which will be presented at the 3 pm meeting.  I hope some of the rest of you will consider writing essay’s on the topic of “The Ultimate Lodge – If I could have it my way, we’d…”

I look forward to seeing you all in a couple weeks to learn, to sing, to feast, and to enjoy Freemasonry together.  Please RSVP to me ASAP so that I can provide the Lodge with numbers for the table lodge.

Fraternally,
Chad Simpson
Master

Comments Off on Sunbury OLR Meeting Postponed

By Order of W.B. Ivan Tribe, Master of the Ohio Lodge of Research, the meeting of OLR scheduled for Saturday, January 25 will be postponed and rescheduled.

There is no meeting worth putting life & limb at risk for! The weather will be 2-4 in. (3-6 in some places) of snow and gusts up to 40 mph. That means “white-out” conditions and is extremely dangerous.

Stay in & stay warm

Sunbury Meeting – January 25, 2014

3 January 2014
Comments Off on Sunbury Meeting – January 25, 2014

From the Secretary:

The Ohio Lodge of Research
Chartered October 16, 1965

The January 25, 2014 meeting will be held at Sparrow Lodge No. 400, 85 Morning Street, Sunbury. Actives will gather at 2 PM and a lodge of Master Masons will be opened at 3 PM by the host lodge.

Sunbury is a village of 4,600 located in Delaware County at the junction of US 36 and OH 3.

Take E Cherry St (OH 37). The lodge is located on Morning St. between N. Vernon and Otis Sts.

Sparrow Lodge was chartered Oct. 21, 1865 by the Grand Lodge of Ohio. It was named for the then Most Worshipful Grand Master Thomas Sparrow. He was born in Utica NY July 30, 1818 and moved to Huron Co. OH as a child. He attended Kenyon College where his brother William was a professor and then studied law which he began to practice in 1840. He was raised in Magnolia Lodge No. 20 Columbus July 29, 1856 and served as Worshipful Master in 1862. He rose rapidly in the Grand Lodge and served as Grand Master from 1863 to 1866. He died Aug 7, 1871 of tetanus and is buried in Columbus.

Sunbury has a curious history. A village of Sune Berie is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Sunbury-on-Thames is a suburb of London. A place named Sunbury was established in Georgia in 1734.
Sunbury Lodge No. 22 was chartered in Pennsylvania in 1779. There is also a Sunbury in North Carolina, Victoria, Australia and New Brunswick, Canada. Ohio’s Sunbury was founded in 1816. Esther McCormick wrote its history in 1966.

Perhaps its most famous resident was William Starke Rosecrans (1819-1898). He graduated from West Point in 1842 and commanded the Army of Mississippi and the Army of the Cumberland during the Civl War. He fought at Rich Mountain, Iuka, Corinth, Stones River and Chickamauga. Following the war he served as Minister to Mexico and was a Congressman from California. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery.

September 2013 Meeting – Albany

27 August 2013
Comments Off on September 2013 Meeting – Albany

The Ohio Lodge of Research will meet at Albany Lodge on Saturday, September 21st at 3 PM.

Albany Lodge No. 723 is located in Athens County in southeastern Ohio. It was chartered in 1949.
The village of Albany is located on US 50 between McArthur and Athens. It was founded in 1842 as a station on the Underground Railroad. It has a Paw Paw Festival in September. Don’t confuse it with New Albany which is northeast of Columbus. Look for Township Road 1270 east of Albany and turn south. The Alexander Local Schools Complex is located at the same exit.
The lodge is located on the east side of the road. A GPS might help. It is three hours from my home.

Albany is the home lodge of Dr. Ivan M. Tribe WM of Ohio Lodge of Research. He is a native of Albany
and an Emeritus Professor of History at Rio Grande University where he has 37 years of service. He has
degrees from Ohio University and Toledo University. Dr. Tribe has published more than 200 articles on rural Ohio, coal mining and country music. He and his wife Deanna have a house full of more records than I have ever seen anywhere else outside a music store. Beside his educational duties Dr. Tribe has served as mayor of Albany. He is a Knight of the York Cross of Honor, a Knight Commander of the Temple and a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.

Some of our senior members may recall that Rio Grande was the alma mater of Bevo Francis who was famous for scoring more than 100 points a game in high school and college basketball contests.

Actives and members will meet at 2 PM. I am informed that light refreshments will follow. Please try to attend if possible.

Norman G. Lincoln, Secretary
